Word-initial glottal stop insertion, hiatus resolution and linking in British English
نویسنده
چکیده
Glottal stop insertion at word boundaries is usually not included in descriptions of the phonology of Southern Standard British English (BrE), and little is known about the factors that determine it. This paper investigates the insertion of glottal stops before vowels at word boundaries (e.g. pronounced as [taUnPIz]) in the spontaneous and read speech of 10 speakers of BrE. Results show that glottal stops are inserted in certain contexts in up to 50% of all cases before vowel-initial words at word boundaries. Glottal stop insertion is least frequent after obstruents (11.8%), followed by sonorants (19.0%) and vowels (29.0%). Preceding high vowels and following low vowels also make glottal stop insertion more likely. In addition, glottal stop insertion is slightly more frequent in read than in spontaneous speech, which suggests that it is a feature of the standard rather than a colloquial feature of BrE.

Hiatus resolution in American English : the case against glide insertion
It has generally been assumed that after non-low vowels in English, hiatus is resolved by inserting a homorganic glide (e.g., ‘seeing’ [sijɪŋ], Ito and Mester 2009). However, despite suspicions that inserted glides may be fundamentally different from lexical glides (e.g., Cruttenden 2001), a systematic phonetic investigation of the purported glide has never been carried out. We examine the natu...
متن کاملGlottal stop detection in German-accented English using ASR
Glottal stops are sounds produced by the closing and abrupt opening of the vocal folds. In German, glottal stops are frequent before word-initial vowels and are a salient word-linking technique. For this reason, German speakers can transfer this word-linking habit to their English productions. Neither in English nor in German are glottal stops phonemes, i.e. they cannot differentiate word meani...
متن کاملHiatus Resolution Strategies in Non-rhotic English: The Case of /r/-Liaison
This paper looks at the different hiatus resolution strategies in potential cases of /r/-liaison in nonrhotic English. Potential contexts of /r/-liaison were identified in a corpus of BBC newscasts and analysed auditorily and acoustically for the occurrence of /r/-liaison, glottal stops, creaky voice or hiatus. The results show that /r/-liaison is a common hiatus-breaking strategy although ther...
متن کاملGlottal Stops Produced by Polish Native Speakers in Polish and in English
This paper examines the use of glottal stops in English as a second language and Polish by Polish native speakers and in English by native speakers. The study compares glottal stop frequency in utterance-initial accented and unaccented positions. The major finding is that Polish native speakers use more glottal stops in English in unaccented than in accented syllables. This tendency is compared...
متن کاملGlottal stops before word-initial vowels in American English: distribution and acoustic characteristics
Despite abundant research on the distribution of glottal stops and glottalization in English and other languages, it is still unclear which factors matter most in predicting where glottal stops occur. In this study, logistic mixed-effects regression modeling is used to predict the occurrence of word-initial full glottal stops vs. no voicing irregularity. The results indicate that prominence and...
